THIS ONE IS FOR LAURI. I started it on Christmas Eve, thinking I could finish in time to give it to her on Christmas. We were pretty broke this Christmas, and I was trying to figure out what I could do for her, and this is what happened.

If any of you know my wife at all, then you know how important her dogs are to her. Especially her Teddy Baird. She was feeling really bad about shipping him off to my mom's for a bit, and I was hoping to cheer her up a little bit. Well, she didn't give me much of a chance to finish it on Christmas Eve, so I just gave her a sketch, with the promise that I would finish it. Here's the start of the painting.

I love you, Lauri.

The dogs both need some work...a lot of work. Especially their eyes. I guess the whole thing needs lots of work, but it's a decent start. I think it's going to turn out okay. I was trying some harder Photoshop brushes. They gave me a MUCH better result than yesterday's disaster.

YIKES. I'M NOT VERY HAPPY with today's installment. I was trying a few different things on this one, none of which worked particularly well. First off, I was trying to make my brush strokes more loose and fluid. The problem is, I couldn't really find a brush that I wanted to use. Maybe that's what I should focus on...learning how to use brushes.

Also, I kept trying to incorporate more chiaroscuro in this one. I got more whites & blacks, but it's still mostly grey. I think I just need to start going back to school. I think that would probably be the best thing for me at this point. Lauri's pretty scared of the idea...which I don't really blame her for. Things are pretty rough right now, with the baby on the way and all. I don't know. We'll figure it out.

Anyway...here's today's sketch.

Yeesh. Well, at least I got something done today...even if it was just barely. Tomorrow will be a better day.

SO I WAS WATCHING AN EPISODE OF DOCTOR WHO and saw this guy who had an interesting shape. I tried to capture some of that in this latest sketch. I think his name was 'Pilot Joe', or something like that. He was only in the show for about two minutes.

I was working on this until all hours of the morning, and I was really starting to get into a groove when Lauri came in to tell me that it was 1:30 & my music was blaring. Oops ... Usually, when I work on stuff, I'll throw my headphones on & listen to music or podcasts. The headphones are usually just plugged into my speakers, which will prevent the speakers from playing anything. Well, I had recently plugged them into the computer instead, just in case I needed to use the microphone to chat over vent or skype since I started playing WoW. The speakers were on, and I felt like an idiot; sitting there with my headphones on, music at full blast. Yeesh...

Well, I realize after working on this one that I need to work on: my backgrounds; making sure that my work looks clean and complete; cloth and clothes; and pretty much everything else. Let's just keep making progress.

SO...I HAVEN'T BEEN SO GOOD about keeping this up to date (sorry, Mom), but I'm going to try from now on ... errr ... I'll at least try harder.

I've decided to try and complete one sketch/drawing/painting every day in 2009. I know I'm a little late to the party, but here's my first one of the year.

Just playing around with different colors & layer styles. I think this one turned out okay. I'm sure I'll look back at it and just see problems (as I'm staring at it, I see problems already), but that's what's good about this. It will help me to see progress throughout the year.
